Community banks tout their mobile-banking services by Robert Burke

hen you think of cutting-edge mobile banking, does your local bank come to mind? Too often the answer is no,

says Jim Cherry, the Richmond-based CEO of Charlotte-based Park Sterling Bank. “I think most people think of a community bank and start thinking, ‘stodgy,’ which is unfor- tunate,” he says. Of course, many community

banks promote the friendly-local-folks image, he says, because it’s a great marketing point. But it’s not the whole st ory. “Most people’s observation is that community banks may have great service, but they don’t have great prod- ucts,” he says. “We have to fight that image.” That issue and others — such as cyberse- curity and the aftermath of the 2008 recession
