NAMES IN THE NEWS
Dr. Andy Schwartz was named Texas’ state veterinarian and
executive director of Texas Ani- mal Health Commission (TAHC) by the 13 governor-appointed TAHC commissioners on May 24. Schwartz grew up on a diverse family farm in Priddy. He received an undergraduate degree in animal agriculture from Tarleton State University before attending Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine where he received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He began his profession- al career in a mixed animal prac- tice that included beef and dairy cattle, horses, swine, and sheep. His career with TAHC began with his position of fi eld veterinarian. He advanced to region director, state epidemiologist and assis- tant executive director. Allison Cooke is the executive director of government affairs
for National Cattlemen’s Beef As- sociation (NCBA). She served as legislative director for Rep. David Rouzer from North Carolina, who serves as the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee’s Livestock Subcommittee. Cooke graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the U.S. Air Force’s Air Com- mand and Staff College. She has degrees in political science and international studies. Sheldon R. Jones is the chief op- erating offi cer of the Soil Health
Institute. Jones will work closely with Wayne Honeycutt, Ph.D., president and CEO, and Steven Shafer, Ph.D., chief scientifi c offi - cer, in pursuing the Soil Health In- stitute’s mission to safeguard and enhance the vitality and produc- tivity of the soil. Most recently,
