Texas BEEF Team Members Run Boston Marathon
T
HIRTEEN MEMBERS OF THE TEXAS BEEF Team ran in the 120th Boston
Marathon proudly wearing their beef jerseys and showcasing beef as a pow- erful protein. Eight additional Team Beef members from other states joined alongside the Texans, ensuring that beef was proudly represented at the historic race. The beef runners started in Hopkinton, Mass., and ran
along the rolling streets into downtown Boston on “Mara- thon Monday” to celebrate Patriots Day alongside more than 30,000 other marathon runners from 99 countries. Each team member participating in the Boston Marathon this year had to achieve a strict qualifying time during a previous marathon. Ruel Sword, Woodway, was the fi rst female fi nisher
for the team with a fi nal time of 3:24:23. The Boston Marathon is 26.2 miles and is the world’s oldest annual marathon, ranking as one of the world’s most prestigious road racing events. Team Beef runners were from Texas, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Wisconsin, Missouri, Idaho and Colorado. Nancy Moore, Texas BEEF Team member and teacher

from Lago Vista, commented after the race, “I often thought of others who have endured some really tough times in their life and I knew that all I had to do was run. And run for them, I did! I also passed those who had lost limbs in the bombing and were running for their own personal victory, which was inspiration beyond words. The phrase ‘Boston Strong’ has always been inspirational and as of April 18, 2016, it became personal.” The checkoff-funded Texas BEEF Team is a commu-
nity of runners, triathletes and cyclists throughout Texas who recognize the nutritional benefi ts of lean beef and the vital role high-quality protein plays in their training. The grassroots program is made up of more than 1,200 passionate members representing the beef community across the state. The national beef checkoff, through its Northeast Beef
Promotion Initiative (NEBPI), supported the runners and had an online presence throughout the race with nearly 60,000 Twitter impressions. Social media activity sur- rounding Team Beef at the Boston Marathon this year can be found by searching the #BeefFuelsBoston hashtag.
