(TSCRA) director Deborah Clark was recently honored with an award recognizing Texas women who have made notable contributions to natural resource conservation. Clark is one of 4 women
who received the 2016 Terry Hershey Award from Audubon’s Texas Women in Conservation program. The other honorees are Janice Bezanson, executive director of Texas Conservation Alliance, Ann Hamilton, Houston conservation philan- thropist, and Marty Leonard, Tarrant Regional Water District board member and Fort Worth philanthropist. The award is named for conservation icon Terry Her- shey, who has contributed to signifi cant conservation projects in Houston, throughout Texas, and nationally for more than 50 years. Clark was honored for her efforts to use and promote

holistic ranch management techniques on the ranch she co-owns and operates with her husband, Emry Birdwell. The 14,000-acre Birdwell & Clark Ranch in Henrietta is an example of land stewardship that supports a healthy cattle operation and healthy wildlife habitat. In 2014, the ranch saw a 452 percent increase in
bobwhite quail populations. This remarkable accom- plishment can be attributed to continued improvement in habitat by rotating cattle grazing around the needs of quail, which was bolstered with timely rainfall. Besides TSCRA, Clark is involved with several orga-
nizations that support land and wildlife conservation and is enrolled in the Holistic Management Certifi ed Educator program. The holistic high-density grazing management practices implemented by Clark and her husband provide a living example of putting conser- vation practices to work to benefi t the land and the wildlife of Texas.
