Was the recent climate summit all just smoke and mirrors?
rise in global temperatures to less than 2C. Almost 200 countries were involved in negotiations to strike the first climate deal committing all countries to cut emissions, which would come into being in 2020. President Obama said it was "the best
A
chance to save the one planet we have". Now, as a child growing up in the ’60s,
winter smog was fairly common. In London in 1952, 4,000 people died prematurely and 100,000 were made ill because of the smog's effects on the respiratory tract. When Britain was ‘the workshop of the
world’, its coal consumption increased from around 10 million tons a year in 1800 to almost 200 million tons in 1950. A pall of smoke hung over our industrial heartland and lack of exposure to sunlight meant that rickets became rife in industrial towns. As a result, the Government passed the Clean Air Act of 1956, which for the first time regulated domestic and industrial smoke emissions. It included powers to establish ‘smokeless zones’, and provided subsidies to householders to convert to cleaner fuels (smokeless solid fuel, gas and electricity).

But it took around 30 years, and a further Clean Air Act before smoke control programmes were finally completed. It goes without saying that clean,
renewable energy has to be the way forward – although with countries such as China burning in excess of 3 billion tonnes of coal a year, smog is certainly not a thing of the past. A cynic might say that the recent climate summit was all smoke and mirrors. They’ve talked the talk… now let’s see some action. Our own industry is doing its bit to drive the sustainable energy agenda forward. The latest electric heating, for example, is just one example (see this month’s features). And the roll-out of smart meters to all homes and small businesses by the end of 2020 will, hopefully, lead to improvements in air quality as a result of reductions in energy consumption. Let’s hope so, for all our sakes.
