T THE CLOSE OF 2015, I’D LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN A PART OF THE Cattleman this year. Every month, the Communications Services staff
at Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) assembles a multimedia jigsaw puzzle of news, reports, articles and advertisements. Every month, our faithful friends and association members graciously agree
to our requests for interviews to share their knowledge, our advertisers trust us to get their messages out to our readers and our association co-workers funnel news of their accomplishments — all through this publication. Many other technical service providers aid in the assembly of the monthly
puzzle and a stellar group of freelance writers add their work to the mix. We thank you all. In this issue focusing on history and heritage, we hope you enjoy the photo
story about one of the few remaining American companies that is crafting boots by hand. TSCRA Special Ranger Rolando Garcia and I were privileged to tour the Anderson Bean and Rios of Mercedes facilities in Mercedes. Truly, the Rios of Mercedes workshop is a treasure trove of antique tools and ma- chinery, carefully maintained and used every day by the craftsmen. Rolando was also kind enough to drive me around Mercedes, showing off that city’s public art project, Botas de Mercedes. See our pictures of the giant boots on page 119 of this issue. This year, 2015, marks the 100th anniversary of the main house at King
Ranch, Kingsville. Thanks to TSCRA Director Robert Underbrink, Houston, for putting us in touch with Bob Kinnan, the area manager of the main house, Santa Gertrudis Heritage Society with King Ranch, Inc., for the story in this issue. In this season of giving, South Texas CattleWomen shines as an example
of generosity. TSCRA member Dorothy Kinsel, Cotulla, was impressed by the work of the South Texas Children’s Home and began a project to provide beef gift certifi cates so the children could enjoy high-quality meals. South Texas CattleWomen continues to support this cause. We thank Maxie Beyer for sharing the story. Find your 2016 Gestation Calendar bagged with this December issue. If
