Resolutions TSCRA committee members reviewed existing associ- ation policies and considered new policies at the 2015 Policy Conference. Outdated policies were sunset, several policies were renewed and a new resolution from the Animal Health Committee was passed by the board of directors. Antibiotics, Antimicrobials, Dr. Dee Ellis, executive
director of the Texas Animal Health Commission, spoke
at the Fever Tick Committee and the Animal Health Com- mittee meetings. He ex-
plained the challenges Texas has in containing the fever tick in the quarantine zone
along the southern border, and addressed other state animal health issues.
Ionophores, and other
Dr. Andy Herring, professor and section leader for Beef Cattle Science at Texas A&M, spoke at a joint session of the Mar- keting Committee and Brand and Inspection Committee, on trends in Texas cattle auctions.
Compounds (AH-44) WHEREAS, antibiotics, antimicrobials, ionophores, and other compounds are important animal health tools for prevention, control, and treatment of dis- ease in all segments of beef cattle production; and WHEREAS, the use of antibiotics, antimicrobials, iono- phores, and other compounds is necessary at times to ensure the proper health and wellbeing of cattle; and WHEREAS, improper use of antibiotics, antimicrobi- als, ionophores, and other compounds may lead to the development of bacterial resistance; and WHEREAS, cattle producers have an obligation to protect animal health while also promoting food safety; now, there- fore, be it RESOLVED, TSCRA strongly supports the ju- dicious use of antibiotics, antimicrobials, ionophores, and other compounds; and, be it further RESOLVED, TSCRA supports the use of sound, peer-reviewed science when addressing issues that involve the use of antibiotics, antimicrobials, ionophores, and other compounds in animals and humans; and, be it further RESOLVED, that TSCRA work with all appropriate enti- ties, industry organizations, and government offi cials to ensure that cattle producers’ access and ability to use these products are retained. new 9/25/15
