Renew Your Ag and Timber Tax Exempt Registration Number Before Jan. 1

T Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, CO

EXAS LAW REQUIRES THOSE CLAIMING AN EXEMPTION FROM SALES TAX ON THE PUR- chase of certain items used to produce agricultural and timber prod-

ucts for sale to hold an Agricultural and Timber Exemption Registration Number (ag/timber number). The law also requires ag/timber numbers to be renewed every 4 years

on a uniform date, regardless of the date the number was fi rst issued. Persons claiming the agricultural exemption on their purchases already

give their supplier an exemption certifi cate that includes the ag/timber number. Effective Jan. 1, 2016, the exemption certifi cate must also include a current expiration date. Therefore, all ag/timber number holders need to renew their ag/tim-

ber number before Jan. 1, 2016, in order to get a current expiration date. The offi ce of Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Glenn Hegar has

provided 3 easy options for renewal of an Ag/Timber number: by tele- phone, online and by mail. To renew, you will need your current ag/timber number; Social Secu-

rity Number (if you do not qualify for a SSN, you must renew by mail and include your national ID number and country of origin on the renewal letter); and webfi le/RT number, if fi ling online. This number is on the top right-hand side of the renewal letter.

How to Renew: By Telephone: Call 1-844-AG RENEW (1-844-247-3639). Once you have

completed the telephone renewal process, your ag/timber number will be renewed within 2 business days. You can look up your ag/timber number by visiting comptroller.texas.gov and clicking on that option on the left side of the page under “Lookup Tools.” Renew Online: From the WebFile page at comptroller.texas.gov, click

on “Sales Tax” and log into eSystems. Follow the ag/timber online instruc- tions. Once your renewal is complete, you can print your courtesy cards or simply make a note of your ag/timber number. Renew by Mail: Current holders of an ag/timber number should re-

ceive a renewal letter in the mail. Follow the instructions in the renewal letter and then keep a copy of the letter for your records. You will receive a confi rmation letter with your new courtesy cards in 4 to 6 weeks. Questions regarding ag/timber number renewals may be directed to

the comptroller’s offi ce at 1-800-252-5555, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p .m., Monday through Friday.
