WhiteWater president Geoff Chutter and China sales rep Dawn Tong meet Wanda chairman Wang Jianlin

From performing arts to theme

parks The Dalian Wanda Group (Dalian being the northeastern Chinese city that the company counts as its home) was founded in 1988 and is famously presided over by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin. It operates in four key sectors: commercial property, luxury hotels, department stores and culture & tourism – where it is keen to make an impression with projects like Wanda Xishuangbanna International Resort, Changbaishan International Ski Resort and Wanda Movie Park in Wuhan. The Wanda Culture Industry

Group is China’s largest cultural enterprise, operating in areas such as cinemas, film production, franchised entertainment, karaoke outlets, performing arts, print media, art investment, travel and now theme parks. Wanda Commercial Properties is a global leader in the field of commercial real estate, responsible for massive developments such as the Wanda Central Cultural District in Wuhan and the tourist town and other facilities that surround its new parks in Xishaungbanna. Wanda Hotels and Resorts

boasts a portfolio of over 71 luxury and 5-star hotels across China, whilst the group’s retail arm operates 99 department stores in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Wuhan. Read an interview with Wanda Cultural Tourism’s executive vice- chairman, Yuan Wang, at bit.ly/1LXKDw

A waterpark named WANDA

Wanda Xishaungbanna’s waterpark, named simply Wanda Water Park, has a botanical theme and offers an oasis of slides, rivers, pools and play structures courtesy of WhiteWater. Throughout the park, guests encounter super- sized vegetation, such as water slides formed from enormous twisted plant stems, where they can slide from blossom to blossom. In total, WhiteWater supplied US$5.3 million worth of product, integrating a tropical jungle theme into each element. The fibreglass is coloured with bright yellows, pinks and blues and supported by vibrant green steel that emulates a flower’s stalk. Complementing the other attractions is a custom-themed AquaPlay Giant RainFortress, inviting guests to play in a lavish garden of beautiful flowers and bright waterslides. The 2,800 litre tipping bucket is painted as a basket full of pansies whilst the structural posts are topped with lotus flowers, hollyhocks and sunflowers. This park marks the first of many projects the Canadian

waterpark specialist is currently developing together with Wanda. Speaking for Forrec, a fellow Canadian company, Gordon Dorrett concludes, “This project was a pleasure, not only because it reflects our specialised skills in creating memorable entertainment experiences, but because it’s designed to give back and contribute to the local community.”
