Chatsworth Partnership Creates Regional Port

Elected officials from the State of Georgia, the Georgia Ports Authority, county and local officials, and CSX officials, signed a memorandum of agreement last month to establish the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth, Ga. The service area will include north Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and parts of Kentucky. The public-private partnership will provide direct rail access to the new inland port and allow expanded access for domestic and international shippers, according to a statement by CSX’s Chief Commercial Officer, Clarence Gooden. Port and rail- road officials estimate the new inland port will reduce Atlanta truck traffic by

40,000 moves annually. The new facility is expected to open in 2018.

Beautifi cation Project Richmond

To express its commitment to the envi- ronment, CSX has partnered with Cap- ital Trees and the City of Richmond on the creation of a 5.5-acre environmental and beautification project in Richmond, Va. The project, named “The Low Line,” will run along Dock Street, adjacent to the Virginia Capital Trail, on the his- toric James River and Kanawha Canal. CSX, which owns the rail trestle that runs along the planned beautification area into downtown Richmond, has agreed to donate $100,000 to support the project. The initiative will include the re- moval of invasive weeds, establishing an attractive landscape with native trees and shrubs, and more.

Belaire Stone Viaduct Preserved

The Great Stone Viaduct Education

Society signed an agreement with CSX for the purchase of an abandoned stone viaduct spanning the community of Be- laire, Ohio. The Great Stone Viaduct was placed on the National Register of Historic Structures in June 1976 and was recognized by the Ohio Historical Society in 2008 with a historical marker. The sandstone structure, consisting of 43 separate arches, spans Belaire’s busi- ness district across 5.5 acres of real es- tate and was abandoned by CSX in 1996 after coal shipments to the Lamira coal preparation plant ended.

Heritage Logo Program

In a nod to the company’s rich railroading legacy, a number of CSX locomotives will decorated with the emblems of predecessor lines. The first unit was GE AC44CW No. 256 with the Seaboard Coast Line logo applied ahead of the cab; it was released from the shop at Waycross, Ga., at the beginning of August. Formed in 1967 when Seaboard Air Line merged with Atlantic Coast Line, SCL would grow into the Seaboard System Railroad, a primary component of CSX. At least ten railroads will be represented, but there has been no total announced. —O.M.V.
