along the BNSF right-of-way, on the route of Amtrak’s Empire Builder. The Great North- ern Railway built it in 1938 to house employ- ees stationed there to maintain and work the steam locomotives that battled nearby Marias Pass and the winter snowfall. To a reporter writing on behalf of the Helena [Mont.] Inde- pendent Record of April 25, 1976, its half-tim- ber construction produces the look of “an over- grown chalet.” As diesels replaced steam after World War II, occupancy fell and GN sold the Inn in 1958. Today it is a rare flag stop for Am- trak, and if the Builder doesn’t stop, tradition compels guests to gather in front of the Inn and wave at the passing train. It may not need to be said, but the Izaak Walton Inn is a popular gathering place for railfans. For more informa- tion, go to http://www.izaakwalton inn.com or call 406/888-5700. I’ve put it on my “must stop” list when I travel to the R&LHS annual meet- ing in Moscow, Idaho, next summer. Chama, New Mexico: An ad in the San-

ta Fe New Mexican of May 18, 1973, extols the Foster Hotel as “The Original Railroad Boarding House” here, advertises both the Narrow Gauge Diner and the Caboose Saloon, and notes the property “has been completely remodeled . . . and is still filled with all the charm of the last century” where “a day spent with us is a day spent with history.” An of- fer some of us can’t resist. Today, the Foster Hotel’s website — http://fosters1881.com — adds that, built in 1881, it is the oldest com- mercial structure in Chama, and is still serv- ing food and drink.
