ABOVE: While the eastbound run from Scran- ton to the top of the Poconos seems to garner all of the attention, it’s really the westbound run from near Henryville to Pocono Summit that’s the real challenge. No. 765 passes the DL&W depot at Cresco in the teeth of the grade on September 7. Just ahead is the most difficult part of the grade as the tracks snake through Devil’s Hole on a series of reverse curves. It was at Devil’s Hole where sister locomotive No. 759 stalled in the early 1970s, an event photographed by Hal Carstens that graced the very first issue of RAILFAN in 1974. On this day, however, No. 765 made easy work of the tough grade.
LEFT: The power house of the Westrock paper mill just west of the town of Delaware Water Gap makes for an industrial backdrop as No. 765 steams past on September 7. In a few min- utes the train will stop at East Stroudsburg to reload passengers who detrained to enjoy the town for a couple of hours. Westrock is a cus- tomer of Delaware Lackawanna, which delivers kaolin from Georgia to the mill. The outbound paperboard, however, leaves by truck.
