ABOVE: South Carolina Central GP10 No. 79 pulls a cut of cars while switching the Sonoco mill in Hartsville, S.C., on April 3, 2015. The railroad is part of Genesee & Wyoming Industries, but No. 75 has yet to receive the corporate paint. The railroad was formed in 1987 to operate over former Seaboard Air Line trackage. After switching the mill, the train will return to the yard at Floyd, located just outside Darlington.
LEFT: The Georgia & Florida Railway is another “modern” short line, formed in 1995 (although the original Georgia & Florida was formed 1906 and was absorbed by the Southern in 1963). It operates almost 300 miles of track, most of it radiating out of Albany, Ga. On December 12, 2014, GP40-2 No. 500 leads a northbound train from Greenville, Fla., to Adel, Ga., passing a peach shed in Barney, Ga., at sunset. The trailing units wear the paint of Georgia & Florida RailNet, the name the railroad went by from 1999-2005.
