Counter top sales take a front seat


Malcolm Duncan, Managing Director of Super Rod, explains why the evolving role of the trade counter means that manufacturers have to be on the ball to keep up with the demand of the customers.


I


n the past the role of the electrical wholesaler was a far simpler business because the installer turned up knowing which products they wanted. Most of these products came in


plain white boxes and for the wholesaler it was a simple job of giving advice and handing over the right kit. But all that has changed and now, the installer wants to see what is in the box. As a result, manufacturers have developed a new range of packaging, which gives far more information about the product and what it does. In some respects, the trade counter has started to echo the retail experience that we see in many high street stores and many wholesalers have changed the way that their ‘shop front’ is laid out as a result.


But perhaps the biggest change is the way in which installers now choose their products, because people who work with their hands buy with their hands. As a result, most want to not only see, but also feel the goods before they make a purchase. The days of the plain white packaging are therefore numbered and manufacturers have been quick to embrace the alternatives to ensure that their products stand out from the rest. At Super Rod this hasn’t been a difficult transition because we take pride in everything that leaves our factory – and that includes the packaging. Super Bullet Kits The Super Bullet Kits have been a firm favourite with installers since their launch and that’s why they are part of the Counter Attack promotion. Let’s face it – most installers now have one of our rod sets and this is the ideal accompaniment – and one that sells itself if it is on show. The handy kit contains four attachments which include a Spike Bullet, which can be used to bore a path through insulation; a Magnetic Bullet which can be connected to a Super Magnet to save time when routing cable; a Flat Bullet which will enable connectors which are clogged up with dust and debris to be cleaned; and a Domed Bullet which will ensure that the installer is able to navigate


difficult terrains with ease.


All four of the bullets are compatible with our Cable Rod sets thanks to the AXM™ fitting system – a feature which is unique to Super
