out. Furthermore, the separately applied air hose at each end of the car is made of a very flexible rubber that will also stand up to everyday model railroad opera- tions. Thoughtful and welcome touches indeed. RMC’s 1965-decorated example with black ends and underframe includes Klasing 1150 hand brake details, plus lettering and data corresponding to load protection appliances inside the proto- type car. Each car includes accurate let- tering for interior protection devices and features one of five accurate hand brake types, depending on the road number. Altogether, the extremely high level of detail and decoration and sturdy details help to make this model a real standout. By 1978, Santa Fe simplified its box- car paint scheme to one with solid red ends, sides, and underbody. Beginning after 1981, Santa Fe went to a new sim- plified sans-serif lettering style for its reporting marks as well. RMC’s second review model is decorated and detailed
to represent a post-1981 car in the Bx- 97 series.
Emblazoned in a bright coat of In- dian Red on sides, ends, and under- body, with an aluminum-colored roof, RMC’s post-1981 example is an attrac- tive car by all measures. The Santa Fe herald and “Shock Control” lettering is printed in white but without the “Super” and “A smoother ride” yellow slogan that surrounded the “Shock Control” on the 1965 versions. Moloco’s reproduction of this simplified scheme is equally well- done and eye-catching in appearance. Through what appears to be a sub- tle gray wash, Moloco provides an un- commonly realistic finish for its galva- nized steel roof that better resembles the slightly oxidized metal appearance of the prototype than you’ll find on other models.
Wheel spacing on both samples, as well as coupler height, checked out right on the mark with an NMRA Mark IV Standards Gauge.
