erything, and everything in its place.” Seems like my mom wanted me to keep my room clean (not a chance), but this advice also applies later in life to my workbench. Yes, folks, I still set a tool down, and

the accursed thing goes to that alter- nate universe. Color has really helped this problem. Knife handles, pliers, and many other tools are now brightly col- ored, making them easier to spot among the debris on the bench. I use that fact to kind of color-code my knives. Red is the new sharp No. 11; green is the flat No. 17 chisel blade; silver (raw metal) is that nifty Micro-Mark graining blade; black is the over-used broken-tipped No. 11 for scraping; and blue is the No. 16 blade for minor trimming jobs. A word about the green one: it almost disappears on a green cutting mat. I wrapped a strip of yellow electrical tape around the handle, so I have half a chance of finding it. On occasion, I load a toolbox and

head over to a friend’s house to help with his railroad. That little strip of yel- low tape is now on all my traveling tools to identify them as mine. This would also work for club members out there who want to keep their tools. My other half at Accurail (the real

brains of the outfit) Dennis Storzek has a fairly large workbench. He claims most projects work themselves down

to about six square inches in the center surrounded by construction debris. He models in HO, and I model in O, so my final work area is slightly larger, and so is the debris field. By that line of think- ing, I have to feel sorry for the folks who work in Z scale because their work sur- face would be down to an inch or so. Take care of your tools, and they will

take care of you. Next month, we will move away from building ideas and into the realm of Mother Nature, discussing trees and weeds.
