Inside the Numbers


The Open, created in 1928 with only two years missed due to World War II, brings in an estimated 550-plus teams and 6,000-plus players into the host city. The Open has been a mainstay celebrat- ing adult volleyball nationally. The event is one of the largest national championships in any sport in the United States. The Open in Detroit in late May attracted 430 teams, 5,160 athletes in 25 different divisions.

Silver medals for Tayyiba Haneef-Park, a three-time U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team athlete, who was recently elected to the USA Volleyball Board of Directors as the indoor female athlete director. Haneef-Park, who was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team from 2001-2012, helped Team USA win silver medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. She com- peted in three FIVB World Championship events (2002, 2006 and 2010) that included picking up the silver medal in 2002.


Grand Slam May 26-31. That was the top fi nish for an American women’s team. Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross forfeited their fi rst match of the event after an injury and withdrew, ending an FIVB pool play winning streak at 30 matches.

Straight victories for Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb on the AVP Tour after winning the New Orleans Open by


defeating Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser on May 24. Patterson and Gibb followed the win in New Orleans with a ninth place fi nish at the Mos- cow Grand Slam, where they defeated compatriots John Hyden and Tri Bourne in pool play. Hyden and Bourne advanced out of pool play and also fi nished ninth.
