Digital load cell allows for new applications L


oad cells are no longer just used in large food


processing plants. Over the past 60 years, HBM has developed strain gauge load cells that are fast, accurate, small and economical so they can now be used in new areas of food production. Today, load cells are used


in many steps throughout the food production process; from chickens hatching and the feeding and milking of cows, to the packing and shipping of meat and dairy products to supermarkets. HBM’s new generation load cell FIT7A allows for entirely new applications HBM has become a key player in the food industry and therefore chose to


launch its new digital load cell, FIT7A, at Northern Europe’s largest FoodTech fair in Herning, Denmark. The three-day fair was well attended by 8,300 guests, who were shown everything from checkweighers with integrated HBM load cells to finished dairy products. Danish agriculture and the Danish food sector is one of Denmark’s


largest export industries, with a total export value of 20 billion Euros. In addition, significant exports of derivative products such as agricultural machinery, equipment and technology for agriculture and food production are also included to the export value. Product and application manager from Darmstadt, Germany, Bernd


Knöll visited Denmark to hear customer responses to the new load cell FIT7A. He had the Danish sales engineer Henrik Bache Jensen, who works at HBM’s Danish headquarters with him. “Weighing processes can result in bottlenecks which can affect the


production rate. To prevent this, HBM focuses on intelligent software and correct weight in the first weighing - also of dynamic applications,” says Bache Jensen. “For example, FIT7A is approved by OIML R60 – accuracy class up to C4 and up to y = 20000, which means a maximum of 0.5g deviation at a load cell with total capacity of 10kg. This was specially developed to address these bottlenecks and still be easy to fit in machine design and maintenance,” he continues. “FIT7A’s new digital technology has


higher precision and can perform accurate measurements under temperature fluctuations and in dynamic applications. This means, the load cells can be installed on multiple production machines in various production environments,” states Knöll. He has been


involved in the development of the FIT load cells and also in the development of the aseptic load cells in stainless steel specifically for the food industry. “Previous load cells in strain gauge technology could handle up to 100


weighings per minute, but with the new technology in the FIT7A, it is now possible to do 180 weighings per minute or more if less accuracy is tolerated,” says Knöll. “This increases production speed, which can lower production costs per unit produced,” he concludes. HBM expects to see FIT7A used in new production contexts where it can


replace other types of load cells, including load cells in flow measurement applications. Possible new areas could be in the pharmaceutical industry as well as in filling/dosing applications that require high precision and high speed.
