ibility you have in where you can go and what you can do. Thus, Emily booked a custom tour to maximize the railroad content. It was important to do the tour sooner rather than later, as the New Safe Confinement arch is nearly finished; once it is in place, it will be impossible to see Reactor 4 and the original concrete sarcophagus. Her research resulted in far more informa-

tion than could fit in a single magazine arti- cle. She created a website to tell the complete story at radioactiverailroad.com. We strongly encourage you to visit the site, as you’ll find a lot more on the background on nuclear en- ergy and the development of the Chornobyl plant. There are also historic photos as well as contemporary photos by others to add to the context of the story. While we do not often

cover “foreign” overseas topics, we strongly felt this rare look inside the exclusion zone was a worthwhile journey. When not heading off into some foreign

land, Emily can be found close to home rid- ing Metro-North in New York and updating her primary website, I Ride the Harlem Line (harlemline.com). It’s one of the better rail-re- lated blogs out there, with frequent updates and well-researched material. —S.B.

COME ONE, COME ALL!

Yaniv was the approximate midpoint of service along the Ovruch to Chernihiv branch. Local trains would run from Yaniv westward to Ovruch, and eastward towards Chernihiv. Yaniv had several yard tracks for storing equipment for these runs; most of the equipment was contaminated after the Chornobyl disaster and left here to die, such as this heavy crane (TOP). After years of disuse, trees have sprouted within the tracks that formerly made up the yard (ABOVE). Overhead is the “Bridge of Death” where the citizens of Pripyat reportedly gathered to view the disaster, not realizing the danger of the radiation to which they were exposed. — EMILY MOSER PHOTOS
