NICTD and the West Lake Corridor

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transpor- tation District/South Shore Line is planning to move ahead with the West Lake Corridor Project. The aim is to tap into the fast-grow- ing southern portion of Lake County, Ind., and provide quick transport into the Chica- go job market. A public scoping meeting was held on October 20, 2014, to enable public comment on the project. The West Lake Proj- ect was first considered in the late 1990s and early 21st century. Keep your eyes on this project; it is one of the largest transit proj- ects in Hoosier history. The price tag is like- ly to be in the neighborhood of $1 billion. In other construction-project news, the NICTD ongoing bridge-replacement effort has put 14 new structures in place, mainly replac- ing 1908-vintage trusses with girder bridges. Thanks to John Parsons and Will Hamilton for the news.

Transit-Oriented Development

Transit agencies often have real estate hold- ings that they do not use fully. Research has revealed that people are willing to pay a pre- mium to live near a railway station or other transit services. With this in mind, the New

York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has a policy of working with real estate de- velopers to help in housing development. In 2014 the MTA transferred 3.2 acres of land to a development company that will construct a four story mixed use complex near the Harri- son, N.Y., Metro-North rail station in West- chester County. What is different about the arrangement is that, instead of paying the MTA, the developer proposes constructing a new garage next to the apartment and re- tail facilities. The garage is to have 569 total parking spaces, with 475 spaces reserved for commuters. The mixed-use complex includes 27,000 square feet of retail space and 143 apartments. Thanks to Harry Ross and David Harris for the information.
