New Cars to Arrive
During late February, three new side dumps cars are expected from car builder JK-CO in Findlay, Ohio. IAIS 9806 through 9808 will replace several much older cars. The cars are copies of 15 side dump cars built by JK-CO for Norfolk Southern during 2014.
Operations
January 17 saw three daylight trains run- ning between Silvis and Peoria, Ill., all with Norfolk Southern-supplied power. Eastbound SIPE 17 (Silvis-Peoria) departed Silvis at 7:48 a.m., with BNSF ES44C4 6830 and NS C40-9Ws 9263 and 9490 leading a train of 105 loads, two empties, and 14,069 tons. Mean- while, two northbound trains were coming out of Peoria. First was PESI 1 17 (Peoria-Sil- vis, first section) with NS C40-9W 9293 for power along with 19 loads, 100 empties, and 5756 tons; PESI 1 departed Peoria at 10:45 a.m. Second was PESI 2 17 with NS C40-9W 9422 for power, which was an empty potash train with totals of 0 loads, 91 empties, and 2770 tons. This train departed Peoria at 11:40 a.m. All three trains met at Bureau, and the Peoria-bound SIPE arrived at its destination at 6:26 that evening. The two PESI trains ar- rived Silvis at 3:15 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.

BNSF SD70MAC 9802 was released from Cedar Rapids & Iowa City’s shop on January 3, and IAIS picked up the unit on January 6. CRSA1 06 (Cedar Rapids-South Amana) departed CIC’s 900 Yard at 8:00 a.m., with IAIS ES44AC 504/GP38-2 703/ES44AC 508 on the head end and BNSF 9802 back in the train. Iowa Interstate Salutes Rock Island Heritage
On February 13, Mid-America Car in Kansas City, Mo., released the newly- painted Iowa Interstate no. 516 and placed it on the setout track for pick-up by Kansas City Southern. The unit was painted in a special scheme to commemorate the railroad’s 30th anniversary of operations over mostly former Rock Island trackage. The paint is reminiscent of the red and yellow paint with speed lettering that debuted on the Rock Island in 1969. The biggest difference is the yellow hood lettering, where the RI used white.

ria train on January 11, which departed at 5:39 p.m. Train 2 SIPE 11 had IAIS GP38-2 703/SD38-2 156/SD38-2 151, on a unit train from SIRE at Council Bluffs to Fort Lauder- dale, Fla. An extra Cedar Rapids to South Amana
run departed Cedar Rapids on January 12 at 12:15 p.m., with symbol CRSA2 12. The train had 87 cars with IAIS ES44AC 505/ES44AC 509/SD38-2 150 for power. An outbound crew was called for 3:30 p.m. at South Amana, and the train turned into SABI 12 (South Ama- na-Blue Island). Out of South Amana, IAIS 152 led 153, slug set 651/721, and SD38-2 157, for a most unusual four EMD and one slug set of power. Departure was at 4:40 p.m. and the train arrived Silvis at 8:20 p.m. During late January, IAIS handled Patriot Renewable Energy’s SW1200 from Annawan, Ill., to South Amana. The former IAIS 250 moved on BICB 21, which arrived South Amana on January 22 at 6:30 p.m., with IAIS ES44ACs 508 and 513 and PRFX 250. After being fixed that evening, the 250 moved back east on SABI 23, which departed Homestead on January 23 at 7:58 a.m. IAIS GP38-2 714 and ES44AC 503 led PRFX 250 back toward Illinois.
Norfolk Southern Train 115 was received
at Peoria late on January 28 with an interest- ing set of power. NS (ex-UP) SD90 7323 led NS C44-9W 9958 and NS SD70M 2622. The train had totals of 93 empties and 3689 tons and departed at 7:45 p.m. Operating as PESI 28 (Peoria-Silvis), the train passed through Bureau at 10:35 p.m., and instead of stopping
at Silvis went on west and arrived at Walcott at 3:20 a.m., when the train was set out, and the power went light back to Silvis.
Potash Trains
An empty set of potash cars was received at Peoria on January 5, and departed at 6:30 p.m., running as PESI 05 (Peoria-Silvis). Power was NS C40-9W 9726 and NS C40-8 8722, and the train arrived Silvis at 11:10 that night. Canadian Pacific took the train late on January 6, and CP ES44AC 8716 and CP AC44CW 9584 were assigned for the trip back to Canada. CP Train 661-920 departed Deer Creek, Iowa, on January 7 at 8:46 a.m. The next loaded train was CP 660-047,
which had CP ES44AC 8716 and CP AC44CW 9584 for power. The CP power was removed at Silvis and two NS units were assigned to the train, NS 8722 and NS 9726. SIPE 06 departed Rock Island at 11:15 p.m., and at 1:30 a.m. on December 7 a Silvis crew went on duty to forward the train to Bureau. Once at Bureau, the day “Rocket” crew, BUSW 07, took the train to Peoria and the Silvis crew turned back west with the second westbound out of Blue Island, BISI 06. CP potash Train 660-048 arrived in the
Quad Cities on January 17 at 4:40 a.m. CP power for the train was ES44ACs 8729 and 8959 in a 1×1 arrangement. IAIS met the train and ran it to Peoria as SIPE 18 (Silvis-Peoria) with NS C40-9Ws 9422 and 9293 for power. The train arrived Peoria at 7:45 a.m. on Janu- ary 18. The empty set of cars came back from Peoria on January 23. Night “Rocket” BUSW 22 departed Peoria at 2:00 a.m. with IAIS SD38-2 157 and GP38-2 703 for power. CP couldn’t take the train on arrival, so the train was parked at Atkinson until that night when it moved on to the Quad Cities. CP potash Train 660-049 arrived Nahant
at 9:50 a.m. on January 27 with 98 loads. Power was CSXT AC44CWs 391 and 203, and IAIS met the train at Davenport. NS mo- tors SD70 2575 and C40-9W 9635 came light out of Silvis and departed with the train at 3:30PM after being called for 2:45PM.
