The competition for speed is as old as the railroads themselves. Throughout the 1930s, steam and diesel locomotives alike were given the bold streamlined styling treatment to project an image of speed and modern efficiency. Streamliners: Locomotives and Trains in the Age of Speed and Style is a new book coming soon by Brian Solomon that takes an in-depth look at the partnerships established between the railroad industry and leading industrial designers like Henry Dreyfuss, Raymond Loewy, Otto Kuhler, and Brooks Stevens. locomotives and sleek carbody diesels competed for attention as railroads began to embrace the concept of lightweight trains. The last great era of passenger train development brought fast named trains that raced from city to city, combining the best elements of speed and style. The scientific and technological impacts of streamstyling are explained, as well as the lasting impact on popular culture. Prominent designers and preserved examples are profiled, along with a review of surviving streamliners still in use today. The hardcover book measures 8.5×11 inches with 208 pages and retails for $35.00 from motorbooks.com, and will be available this September. Also coming this fall from Motorbooks is Railway Depots, Stations & Terminals. This new book explores the gamut from small-town depots to big city terminals and everything in between. Of course, the train station is our first contact with the railroad, a gateway to a vast transportation network. The railroad station is often a source of community pride, and in some cases, a reminder of sacrifices made in the name of progress. The hardcover book measures 8.5×11 inches with 176 pages and retails for $30.00 from motorbooks.com, and will be available this September. Several titles are due this spring from Morning Sun Books. Video Review

Reading & Northern 425: Sound and Fury; SteamTrainVideos.com, P.O. Box 2562 Blaine, WA 98231; www.steamtrainvideos.com; DVD: $20.00 or Blu-Ray: $25.00 plus $3.00 domestic shipping. 101 minutes.

Let me start this review by first banging my head against the wall. Yes, you read that correctly. I’m banging my head right against my office wall here even as I type this. Why, you ask? Because evidently I missed out on one of autumn 2014’s best railfan events and I

have no excuse for not being there. Watching this action-filled DVD makes me wonder just what I was doing that was so important that I couldn’t drive the short 23 miles to be trackside to see 425 in all its glory last fall. Needless to say I won’t make that mistake again this year, and this DVD has me seeing Reading & Northern’s 4-6-2 No. 425 in a whole new light. After viewing it for yourself, I’m pretty sure you’ll want to see her in person as well — and soon! James Parfrey of SteamTrainVideos was however smart enough to be trackside for part of Reading & Northern’s fall excursion series, and we are the better for him being there. This DVD goes a long way in showcasing just how impressive 425 is to see in operation. In fact, I’m willing to bet that just the first minute and 23 seconds of footage will get your
