The railway, which is owned by local municipalities, has filed for bankruptcy protection. The railway’s debts are about $2 million but the provincial trans- portation ministry owes the railway about $750,000 for work completed on the line. Work in currently focused on securing freight service on the section between Matapedia and New Carlisle. Operation beyond New Carl- isle, including the return of VIA Rail service to Gaspe, would come later.

St. Peter’s Junction and Sydney, N.S., Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia ran its last train from Sydney on December 30, 2014. The train was led by LLPX GP15-1 1504. On January 16 Nova Scotia’s Utility and
Review Board issued its decision on the rail- way’s application to discontinue service be- tween St. Peter’s Junction and Sydney. The Board ruled that the railway can discontinue service between the two points on October 1, 2015. Until that time CBNS is required to provide rail service to any shipper that rea- sonably requires service and is prepared to pay a reasonable rate for the service. Genesee & Wyoming previously announced that any shipper requiring service would be provided with alternate means of transport since they do not intend to operate any more trains over the line.
