ABOVE: On June 22, MRL SD45-2 No. 318 leads a Spokane-to-Laurel road freight near Huson, Mont. OPPOSITE: Not long after sunset on one of the longest days of the year, three MRL SD45-2s head west on a BNSF Railway manifest freight near Plains, Mont. Two of the three locomotives feature MRL’s new red circle paint scheme that was intro- duced in 2009. BELOW: A decade before the SD45-2s brought scores of railfans to Montana, semaphore blades were the big attraction. Two days after Thanksgiving 2014, a trio of MRL SD45-2s lead a train past some retired old signals near Superior.
