Two brand new books address the current state of flame retardants for plastics materials, reflecting the demands for ever-improving performance in increasingly diverse and demanding applications. Concerns about toxicity and environmental effects have resulted in high levels of research focused on the replacement of halogen- ated materials and on increased understanding of the actions and impacts of the alternatives. As non-halogenated
additives perform differently in various materials and applications, these books will provide a welcome explanation of a complex topic. Both are well-structured and clearly written for a broad audience of scientists, technologists, engineers and others in industry and research.
Edited by Papaspyrides & Kiliaris, Polymer Green Flame Retardants provides a thorough review of the state-of-the-art in FR systems for plastics, written by many acknowledged academic
experts. It is divided into five sections covering the funda- mentals of polymer combus- tion, environmentally benign classes of FR additives and fillers (well-established compounds and novel retardants derived from renewable sources), FR behaviour of polymer nano- composites, FR biomaterials and finally a broader examina- tion of various other health and environmental issues. The book addresses the
performance of flame retardants in a wide range of plastic materials, but also their limitations, such as reducing polymer stability and effects on health and fire toxicity. Further green aspects
described include the recycling of plastics containing flame retardants and the use of life cycle analysis to determine the total impacts of flame retardants and nanocompos- ites on the environment and human health. Edited by Morgan and Wilkie, The Non-Halogenated Flame Retardant Handbook has similar aims but a slightly narrower scope and hence more detail on current
commercial solutions. The handbook format is designed to help the reader understand and utilize the range of FR compounds and also to appreciate their limitations. The nine chapters have been written by expert authors, drawn mainly from industry. They cover the same established classes of non-halogenated FR systems: phosphorus, nitrogen, boron and silicon compounds, mineral fillers, intumescent systems and nanocomposites, plus other non-halogen chemistries and potential future solutions based on transition metals, sulphur, carbon and tin. Extensive references are provided to the underlying science and also to articles describing of the performance and practical applications of many commer- cial grades. ‘Engineering’ solutions typically incorporat- ing a physical barrier to fire spread rather than a chemical FR additive are also briefly examined.
