3M’s tests show that you only need PPA in the outer layers to control melt fracture - the addition of PPA in the middle layer has no infl uence


organized by Compounding World publisher Applied Market Information (AMI) in Cologne in October, Dominique Rolly from 3M Belgium talked about the use of the company’s Dynamar fl uoropolymer PPAs to enlarge the process window for three-layer blown fi lm extrusion, where melt fracture and interfacial instability are key problems to overcome.


Depending on the polymers being processed, the use


of a PPA may or may not be necessary in all three layers. To reduce melt fracture, it is only needed in the outer layers, and in some cases, addition of the PPA in the core layer actually reduces interfacial stability compared to when it is only used in the skin layers. Arkema spoke on fl uoropolymer PPAs at AMI’s


Polyolefi n Performance conference, which took place in Philadelphia, PA, USA in September 2014. Business development engineer Jason Pomante pointed out that both thermoplastic and elastomeric types of these PPAs are available. Elastomeric types are more sticky, and may need mineral partitioning agents to stop them agglomerating. These minerals usually have a negative effect on PPA effi ciency, said Pomante. In its Kynar range of fl uoropolymer PPAs, Arkema


offers grades that are pure polymer, and others that also contain a synergist. The former have much higher thermal stability, while the latter can only be used at melt temperatures below 240°C, but they have opti- mized effi ciency:cost ratios and retain their effi ciency in fi lled compounds. DuPont also offers fl uoropolymer PPAs, under the


Viton FreeFlow banner. Global product manager Leah Mulcahey says that products have undergone constant development since their introduction, with products in the most recently launched Z Technology family “signifi cantly” outperforming conventional PPAs. The range includes grades (Z100 and Z110) that combine improved fl uoroelastomer rheology with

polyethylene glycol as an interfacial agent to control the fl uoroelastomer particle size delivered to the fi lm die. “The resulting large particles of fl uoroelastomer coat internal die surfaces more quickly and with lower dosage levels than do conventional process aids,” the company claims. Addition rates can be 30%-50% less than with competing polymer processing aids. Daikin is yet another supplier of fl uoropolymer-


based PPAs, with its Dai-El range. The most recent addition is Dai-El DA910, which the company says performs twice as well as the previous generation in LLDPE and mLLDPE compounds.
