PlastIndia 2015 | event preview

PlastIndia makes its move

PlastIndia is well established as the leading plastics exhibition in one of the most exciting and dynamic markets for the global polymer industry. The event, which is held every three years, returns on 5-10 February 2015. This year it will be attracting extra interest and scrutiny as it has moved from its estab- lished location of New Delhi to a brand new exhibition facility at Gandhinagar in the state of Gujarat. There are some valid reasons for the relocation.

Gujarat is a major focus for India’s fast growing manufacturing sector – the PlastIndia Foundation claims that more than 60% of India’s plastics industry is based in the state. In addition, the aging exhibition centre in New Delhi was reportedly struggling to handle the demands of displaying and running large numbers of plastics processing machines. The new purpose-built facility in Gandhinagar should be much better equipped to cope with such requirements. However, the timing and management of the move

have raised questions from the industry. The relocation was only announced in September 2014 and confi rmed in October 2014, just four months before the huge event. Many exhibitors and visitors had already made plans to be in New Delhi next month, which had been promoted as the location before the late switch. Many signatories to an online petition against the move have complained that they have lost money as a result of the late change.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the

logistics of running a large international exhibition in Gandhinagar, which is a new city located around 20 km from Ahmadabad. There are currently very few hotels in Gandhinagar, while Ahmadabad itself cannot compete with the volume and range of accommodation available in Delhi. In addition, public transportation connections between Gandhinagar and Ahmadabad are poor and time-consuming, although the organiser says that it will arrange shuttle buses “from important strategic points”. Leading machinery organisations have also sought

reassurances that the new exhibition centre, which was still being completed last year, will be fully fi nished and fi t-for-purpose in time for the show. The event organ- iser abandoned previous plans to move the exhibition from Delhi to Gujarat back in 2013 over fears that the new fairground would not be ready in time, only to reverse that decision late last year. The venue has since been used for a large exhibition, but not one that
