Shachihata of Japan is best known for its Artline pens and Xstamper stamps, but it is also active in materials research. Its NS-01 is a nucleating master- batch specifically formulated to improve the tensile properties of cast polypropylene film. The supplier says that the addition of 1-2% of NS-01 is enough to increase tensile strength at yield by more than 40% (23.8 MPa at an addition rate of 1%, vs. 17.0 MPa in pure PP). The film remains transparent, even though the NS-01 masterbatch promotes crystallinity within the film. NS-01 is distributed by WestOne Distribution in the US and Asia, while Dreyplas handles sales in Europe.

Nucleating agents Milliken says its Hyperform HPN-20E enables polyethyl- ene to be used in even more diverse packaging applica- tions than ever before. It increases the crystallization temperature of the polymer, allowing earlier de-mould- ing of parts, cutting cycle times and increasing produc- tivity up to 10% and in some cases by as much as 20%. Hyperform HPN-20E is suitable for high barrier high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blown film, industrial blow moulded containers, caps and closures, and extruded tubes, as well as in linear low-density PE (LLDPE).


Polymer processing additives Various types of additive are used as polymer process- ing additives – PPAs – in film production. The most widely used are probably fluoropolymers, which are normally used at levels of between 200 and 1,000 ppm, and are approved for food contact applications. They work by creating a non-slip surface that is constantly removed and renewed on the die as the melt is converted into film. Lower molecular weight organic and inorganic chemicals, including polyethylene glycol, calcium carbonate, and silica, are also used. 3M is a major supplier of fluoropolymer specialty


additives via its Dyneon subsidiary. It says these have numerous benefits: for example, they eliminate melt fracture by providing a more even velocity profile across the flow front, they reduce die build-up, improve the processability of resins with low melt indices, and also reduce gel formation.
