event preview | Compounding World Congress 2015

The speaker line up for the fi rst day of the Compounding World Congress 2015 includes (from top to bottom): Andy Beevers; Holger Kronimus; Heinrich

Lingnau; Bernd Sparenberg; Dr Stefano Zocca

Andy Beevers, the editor of Com-

pounding World, will chair the conference and will also give the opening paper on changes in the global compounding industry. Using data from AMI Consulting, he will analyse global market trends and help to set the scene for the conference. Beevers has been writing, editing and publishing magazines about the interna- tional plastics industry for more than 25 years and he led the launch of Compound- ing World magazine six years ago. He’s therefore well positioned to provide an overview of industry developments.

The opening paper will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘strategies for growing a profi table compounding business in an increasingly competitive global market- place’. This will feature four of Europe’s most infl uential leaders at international compounding operations. They are:  Holger Kronimus, vice president Europe and general manager of specialty engineered materials at PolyOne

 Heinrich Lingnau, vice president and general manager for EMEA at A. Schulman  Bernd Sparenberg, vice president for technical compounds at Albis

 Dr Stefano Zocca, managing director of So.F.teR

This experienced panel will discuss a

range of strategic issues, including: globalisation; developing new markets; maximising margins; regulatory issues; improving sustainability; and the changing role of compounders in the plastics supply chain. Regulatory and legislative issues will

be covered in more detail in a presentation by Dr Anna Gergely, director, EHS regulatory at the international law fi rm Steptoe & Johnson. She will examine how REACH will shape plastics formulations in Europe.

Dr Gergely has a PhD in chemistry,

which enables her to give not only legal advice, but also a scientifi c interpretation of complex REACH matters.

Specifying fi llers and reinforcements The second session of the conference will focus on developments in fi llers and reinforcements for adding strength to thermoplastic compounds. Dr Jaap van der Woude, associate director at PPG

Industries, will cover new developments in glass fi bre reinforcements for plastics and the parameters for high glass contents in polyamides. His presentation will focus on the important role that sizing plays in the performance of glass-reinforced polyamide compounds, and look at how reinforce- ments can be optimised to meet specifi c application requirements.

New developments in talcs and mineral blends will be discussed by Jérôme Crepin-Leblond, who is development

manager polymer at Imerys Talc Europe. In particular, he will focus on applications in high-performance lightweight polyolefi n compounds, including formulations that offer high stiffness and scratch resistance.

Increasing the value of thermoplastics

The next session of the Compounding World Congress will focus on three different ways to increase the value of thermoplastic compounds.

The fi rst presentation will examine the use of material markers in the fi ght against product piracy and counterfeiting. The talk will be given by Jochen Moesslein,

managing director of Polysecure, a leading player in anti-counterfeiting technologies for plastics, which have recently been attracting growing levels of interest among leading brand owners. His presentation will also cover the use of markers for identifying plastics in order to improve recycling effi ciency and therefore sustainability. He will be followed by Dr Daniel Röme, director of business development and innovation at Nexam Chemical, which is headquartered in Sweden and operates a production plant in Scotland. The company has been busy developing and patenting a range of innovative cross-linking technolo- gies for enhancing various plastics,

including polyamides, PBT, PET, PP, PE and

PEEK. Its Nexamite PBO additive can be used as a crosslinker and chain extender, plus it is an effective compatibilizer and acid scavenger. It can be used for improving hydrolytic and thermal stability, upgrading recycled material and the compatibilization of blends. Dr Gerhard Maier, board member and CTO at

Polymaterials in Germany, will conclude the session with a paper entitled ‘high-throughput screening for
