engineering polymers, including polyamides. Glass fi bres play an important role in compound

reinforcement, and Jaap van der Woude, director of science and technology, Europe at PPG Industries Fiber Glass, explained the role of glass fi bre sizings by comparing data for different sizings in polyamides. Other additives affect the compound as well; for example, the type of sizing has a larger effect in a halogen-free fl ame retardant formulation than in a conventional, brominated fl ame retardant formulation. Carbon fi bres are moving from the realm of thermo-

sets into thermoplastics, said Matthew Howlett, thermoplastics product manager and in-house counsel for Zoltek, which is now a subsidiary of Toray Group. Zoltek produces large tow, industrial-grade carbon fi bre that is available in several forms, such as chopped, prepreg and fabric. It costs less than aerospace grades, which makes its use in high-volume thermoplastic applications feasible. Wind energy applications are a growing use, and automotive and electronics applica- tions are in development. In these applications, reinforced plastics will replace metal to make lighter- weight parts.

Duane Shooltz, president and COO of S&E Specialty Polymers provided insights into the American market

Adding conductivity In many metal-replacement applications, the electrical and/or thermal conductivity of polymers must be enhanced. Conductive carbon black is one of the key additives used to improve electrical conductivity. To maintain the mechanical properties of the polymer, it is desirable to have a low conductive additive loading. Cabot’s Vulcan XCmax product family is based on a new
