and the propellers are turned, via the gearboxes, by these engines. T e propulsion motors now can be operated in the opposite sense as generators, using a small amount of energy from the propulsion engines to supply electricity to the ship’s services. T is in turn allows the ship service generators to be shut down, once again reducing overall operating hours of the ship’s diesels and saving maintenance cost. T is hybrid confi guration is a versatile propul-

sion solution and is particularly suited to the varying operational scenarios encountered by naval warships and auxiliaries. Using electric propulsion motors powered by the ship’s generating sets to turn the propeller saves fuel, reduces emissions and reduces maintenance costs of the main engines, which can be shut down. T e generating sets are running to meet other electrical needs of the ship anyway, so the overall number of hours run by the various diesel engines onboard is reduced. In addition to the propulsion motor and variable

speed drive equipment GE will also supply switch- boards, alternators, cargo pump drives and the bow thruster motor and drive.

As briefl y highlighted in the July/August issue

of Warship Technology, GE has also been selected to supply hybrid propulsion technology for the UK Royal Navy’s Type 26 Global Combat Ship (GCS). Under current plans, 13 Type 26 Global Combat

Ships will be delivered to the Royal Navy. A key requirement was that the ship’s propulsion system had to be very quiet. “T e motors we will be supplying are very quiet, due in large part to the use of patented anti-vibration technology,” said GE. “Reducing radiated noise from the motor makes it exception- ally quiet, which is obviously very important for naval operations.”
