The Big Red RedNet D16

RedNet - the Dante-based audio I/O and networking system - is a big step for manufacturer Focusrite; it's a very different type of product for a brand that has always put the emphasis on analogue superiority with digital compatibility added on. RedNet marries the two as equal partners - high-end analogue with high-end conversion and audio networking: flexibility, audio quality, and a range of hardware that suits almost any size of enterprise.

RedNet has had major successes in education and live sound, and now commercial music, broadcast, and post production facilities are following suit.

In education the needs centre around catering for large numbers of students, possibly on a wide range of courses, without major infrastructure upheaval. For live sound the

system flexibility of Dante means networks can be tailored for the job at hand - it's just as capable in complex, zoned set-ups as it is with point-to-point.

Studios have their own needs too, which include the ever-more demanding flexibility imperative. No studio wants to turn away business, so being able to put any room - or even any booth or any desk - to any purpose, without comprising service or quality is a key pillar of that strategy.

Not only is RedNet compatible with the Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS - enables a computer's in-built Ethernet port for network connectivity with a DAW), there are added layers of performance with the RedNet PCIe card (dedicated port, 128 inputs and outputs at 96kHz and up to 64 at 192kHz) and RedNet Control software, as well as the RedNet 5 Pro Tools HD interface.

RedNet 1 and 2 are analogue line level interfaces (eight and 16 channels in and out, up to 192kHz) and RedNet 4 is the eight-channel microphone pre-amplifier (including line and DI selection, remote control).

On the digital I/O side, RedNet 3 features up to 32 channels of AES/EBU, S/PDIF, and ADAT; RedNet 5 is the Pro Tools HD interface, and RedNet 6 is Focusrite's Dante / MADI bridge with on-board asynchronous sample rate converter. RedNet D16 is a 16 channel AES/EBU.
