UAD on Later with Jools and The X Factor
Sound Supervisor Mike Felton began using the Apollo Quad with a Thunderbolt Card on the latest season of Later….With Jools Holland in conjunction with a Studer Vista 8 for inserts and auxiliary effects channels. He explains that Apollo exudes confidence in build quality:
“The Apollo is a fantastic interface that is reassuringly built, and I love that it is a standalone processor that does not require dependence on a computer. I can configure and store my settings during rehearsals with confidence that they will be available and running for the live show. There are several UAD plug-ins that I use on a regular basis and a seemingly endless number of instances that I can call up at a whim. The LA2A compressor, EMT140 plate reverb, SPL Transient Designer and SPL TwinTube are used on a regular basis and they sound just as good as the originals.”
The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent Sound Director Robert Edwards is extremely impressed with the Quad Apollo and UAD plug-ins supplied by HHB. He comments:
“I have several UAD Plug-ins and I'm genuinely delighted that the device does do what it says on the tin. I'm lucky to have some of the Neve hardware to compare the plug-ins to, and the modelling of the 33609 seems very accurate, without all the problems associated with the hardware. The Lexicon plug-in is remarkable too. If I were building a studio from scratch, it would be my first call outboard purchase.”
