Plenty To Learn, Discuss and Enjoy at Summer Meeting in Arlington
T
SCRA WELCOMED ASSOCIATION LEADERS, MEMBERS AND guests to the 2014 Summer Membership Meet- ing, held at the Sheraton Arlington June 9-11. At-
tendees enjoyed special events, informational meetings and heard from industry speakers, as well as taking in all the attractions Arlington has to offer. The three-day block of meetings and events kicked
off on the evening of June 9 with a welcome recep- tion at the Sheraton Arlington, where folks enjoyed catching up with their fellow cattle raisers. Attendees were also treated to a private screening of Farmland, a feature fi lm that takes an intimate look at farmers and ranchers in their 20s, what it takes to provide the food we eat and how the industry is changing. One of the featured stars of the fi lm is rancher Brad Bellah, son of long-time TSCRA member Jody Bellah, both of Throckmorton.
The second day boasted a full day of briefi ng ses-
sions and meetings from TSCRA’s various committees. Cattle raisers heard the latest on a number of topics,
including an update on the Red River-Bureau of Land Management issue from Caleb Pool, district represen- tative from the offi ce of U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry. Kyle Frazier, executive director of the Texas De-
salination Association, discussed how education and emerging technologies in water desalination is prov- ing to be a viable alternative for quenching the state’s ever-increasing thirst. With an abundance of brackish groundwater and a ready source of salt water in the Gulf of Mexico, Frazier believes Texas is in a good position to take advantage of these resources for supplementa- tion of the state’s shrinking fresh water supply. Drs. Gary Smith and Bill Mies, Texas A&M Uni- versity cattle specialists, gave a very informative talk
Long-time TSCRA members Jody Bellah, left, and son Brad Bellah, both of Throck- morton. Brad is one of the young ranchers and farmers featured in the fi lm Farmland, shown to Welcome Reception attendees.
Kyle Frazier, Texas Desalination As- sociation, left, and TSCRA Director Jay Evans, chair of the Natural Resources and Environment committee. Frazier brought some equipment used in the desalination procedure to show meeting attendees.
