National Championships for Rifl e & Pistol 2014 USA Shooting

An invite to Granada, Spain, and the 2014 World Shooting Championships awaited top Junior and non-Olympic event com- petitors at the USA Shooting National Championships (USASNC) for Rifl e & Pistol in Fort Benning, Georgia, June 23 – 29. With so much on the line,

attendance at the home of the U.S. Army Marksman- ship Unit (USAMU) saw more than 525 starts as athletes gunned for World Team selection, National Championship prestige and the honor of being named to USA Shooting’s National or National Junior Team for the top-two fi nishers. Winning the National Championships is an

important goal of every top-caliber shooter, but in the open-level category, it took a back seat to the season’s ultimate quest which is World Champion- ships success and potential Olympic qualifying op- portunities in Spain. But for the Juniors and those competing in non-Olympic events, often overshadowed by their Open and Olympic counterparts, success at the National Championships could earn them a spot on the USA Shooting Team that will compete in Granada in both open and Junior-level events. Fifty-fi ve World Team

spots were decided in the Olympic Junior rifl e and pistol events. Non-Olympic

events eligible for World Team selection included Women’s and Junior Wom- en’s 50m Prone Rifl e, Men’s Center Fire and Standard Pistol and Junior Men’s Sport and Standard Pistol. National Championships

opened with titles awarded in Women’s Air Rifl e, Standard and Center Fire Pistol, Men’s Junior Sport Pistol and Men’s Three- Position Rifl e. Representing the U.S. in Standard Pistol will be National Champion Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs), silver medal- ist Greg Markowski (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit/ Columbus, Georgia) and bronze medalist Emil Milev (Temple Terrace, Florida). Joining Center Fire

Champion Brad Balsley (USAMU/Uniontown, Penn- sylvania) and bronze medal- ist Markowski on the World Championship team would be silver medalist Michael Gaser (USAMU/Columbus, Georgia). Junior Women’s Air Rifl e

World Championship team members were also decided as Junior National Cham- pion Sonya May (Rockland, Massachusetts), National Champion Dacotah Faught (Amenia, North Dakota) and Minden Miles (Weather- ford, Texas) earned berths. On Day 2 of the National

Championships, seven more Junior athletes secured spots on the Rifl e and Pistol teams that will compete by virtue of winning medals
