Safer mass evacuation strategy


W


hen an emergency arises, evacuation is primarily conducted via davit or free-fall lifeboats located in protected areas within an oil and gas


facility. However, in a fire or gas explosion lifeboats can become inaccessible and an alternative ‘secondary’ means of evacuation is required. Traditionally these are throwover, self-righting liferafts, mounted at all deck levels around the facility. Yet for personnel to access the liferafts, they must move from the deck to sea level. Because most oil and gas facility decks are at a far higher elevation than ship decks, this action is hazardous and has resulted in injuries and fatalities as in many cases only a knotted rope or rope ladder is available. The Survitec Offshore Mass Evacuation System is designed to address


hazards associated with the traditional approaches to secondary evacuation. It offers full deployment in less than one minute. The deck-mounted solution can evacuate up to 150 personnel from topsides down to sea level via a fire- and smoke-protected vertical, telescopic chute directly into a single, high-capacity liferaft. A key advantage is that full evacuation can begin immediately upon system deployment – as opposed to other solutions that must wait for personnel to descend the chute and then begin deployment of additional rafts from a platform. The risks associated with cross boarding are also eradicated as the system allows direct raft entry. l
