The optics community met recently at Optatec in Frankfurt, where further progress was made on proposals to exclude lead and cadmium used in optical glass and filters from REACH and RoHS EU regulations. The regulations could restrict development of optical components, which in turn has much wider knock-on effects for a whole range of industries. Jessica Rowbury reports from Optatec on page 4, including an update on the action taken regarding the REACH and RoHS directives. There are also feature articles on silicon photonics (page 12), which is progressing at an astonishing rate thanks to the resources being poured into the field by multinational semiconductor companies like Intel; and on single photon counting (page 16), the detectors for which have also progressed to the point where they can not only count individual photons, but give a temporal measurement as well – useful for certain fluorescence imaging techniques. There is also an article on the latest advances being made in laser materials processing on page 20, as well as a preview of Lasys on page 25. Electro Optics and our sister title, Laser Systems Europe, will be at Lasys, so please feel free to stop by our booth (4A 47) or keep up to date with news from the show at
www.lasersystemseurope.com. I look forward to seeing you there!
