BESPOKE SOLUTIONS The decision whether to deploy a stan- dalone boxed radar solution or move towards a more integrated radar solution incorporated directly within the lighting infrastructure lies with the manufacturers, but AGD can accommodate both routes as ably demonstrated in other sectors of VAS signage and speed enforcement. This design service may be particularly ben- eficial in, for example, conservation areas or tourist sites where authorities want the radar technology to be in keeping with the existing street furniture. Recent light- ing industry stakeholder dialogues would suggest that both requirements need to be considered. The growing demand for even lower
power detection requirements will be addressed in new radar designs that incor- porate the critical requirements of the detection platform from the lighting man- ufacturer perspective.
SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIVE LIGHTING The road network is constantly evolving and transport authorities have to keep up with the pace of change as car ownership
increases, congestion levels rise, national safety requirements come into force, unpredictable weather patterns occur, EU targets are issued, to name a few. Lighting control systems need to reflect
these shifting dynamics – far from the fixed, timed lighting control of yester- year – streetlights need to be responsive and responsible, lessening environmental impacts. With an installed base of circa 120 million plus streetlights in Europe, this gives an idea of the scale of the cost savings that could be made if dynamic street light- ing is deployed.
