A new era
The Institute of Highway Engineers has a new President. John Nightingale is taking over from Richard Hayes. Paul Hutton chatted with him to find out about the organisation, his role, and its place in ITS
For those who don’t know, what is the IHE and what does it do? The IHE’s roots go back to 1965 when an organisation called the Association of Highway Technicians (AHT) and was established under the trusteeship of the CIHT. In 1972 it became independent and was
renamed the Highway and Traffic Techni- cians Association (HTTA) and gained the privilege of being able to add members to the national register. Another name change came in 1989 to the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers (IHIE)

when it was licensed by the Engineering Council to accredit University and Col- lege courses. I joined the IHIE about 10 years after this. We had our final name change in 2009 when we dropped the “I” from the IHIE and became the Institute of Highway Engineers. This was to reflect the fact that our license to review incorporated engineers (IEng) and engineering techni- cians (EngTech) was extended to include chartered engineers (CEng). I was part of the task force that

vide professional development oppor- tunities, support and leadership to members to achieve and maintain professional recognition. Members are encouraged to share best
practice and support each other in many ways including supporting colleagues through the professional registration pro- cess. Trained volunteers at the Institute mentor and review prospective registrants and confer professional status to individu- als which is then registered with the Engi- neering Council.
