FROM THE EDITOR: Smart thinking
Paul Hutton My road to Smart Highways
I
was going through some old photographs at the weekend and discovered some of me at a party celebrating the end of my postgraduate journalism course at Cardiff University when it dawned on me these pictures were of me a full 20 years ago.
Looking at my younger self, little did I think then that as my career started out as a radio newsreader, football commentator and occasional DJ (poptastic!), I was going to somehow end up in the world of intelligent transport systems and then editing a trade magazine on the subject.
My journey here came via a radio traffi c news company where I was initially hired to bring a more journalistic approach to their information gathering. T at led me to working with information sources across the industry where I discovered the blossoming ITS sector and became fascinated by it.
What I thought would be a year-long career diversion somehow became an area of expertise.
So here I go taking on the job of editing a revamped Smart Highways from my friend Kevin Borras (who I thank for starting this title in the fi rst place), bringing news and views from a UK perspective. I’d also like to thank the editor of our sister magazine Highways, Alec Peachey for assisting with some of the unique requirements of magazine journalism.
I’ve briefl y introduced myself here and want to use the title to regularly get to know leading people in our industry. One thing I notice is how we oſt en meet people but sometimes don’t really know each other.
Hence I introduce a new regular “big interview” feature where we fi nd out more about leading industry fi gures, and in this issue learn about Mott MacDonald’s Nabil Abou-Rahme, and the experience, travelling and tragedy that has shaped the man running one of our major consultancies.
I also welcome former Transport Minister Steve Ladyman to join Jennie Martin and David Bonn as regular columnists.
In this issue we also hear interesting thoughts about insurance, automated vehicles, analytics and traveller information, including learning from elsewhere in the world. Plus we have plenty about the many events we can attend.
As I’ve had to choose a picture of me to illustrate my foreword, I resist using a shot from 20 years ago, and instead choose one of me now but wonder how much more hair I might have lost by 2034!
