Last autumn, Cubic Transportation Systems bought Serco’s integrated transport business. Paul Hutton caught up with the company’s Director of Worldwide Marketing Communications, Martin Howell, to find out more about the motivation for the purchase and how the integration has been going
Firstly, what is the main part of Cubic’s business? The core of Cubic Transportation Systems’ business is the integration of transportation
revenue management
and information services. Traditionally, we have been known as the ‘gates and ticketing people’. However, over the last decade or so we have been changing – it’s something of a continuum in fact. Really we are evolving from being a
revenue management systems provider that provides information into an infor- mation processor that also handles rev- enue management. I’ll explain more about what that
means later. Increasingly, Cubic delivers services to operators that give their pas-

sengers the tools to make the most effec- tive choices across all modes of travel in a city or region, as well as being able to choose the smartest and easiest way to pay for their journeys – whether this be by ‘traditional’ ticket machine, via mobile or online. Cubic designs, develops, manufac-
tures, supplies, installs and integrates these services and we can manage an operator’s entire revenue collection sys- tems whether that be public transport such as trains or buses, or private travel such as road tolls, bike hire or taxis. We work globally, and every year,

So what does the newly- acquired ITMS do? ITMS, previously a division of Serco, provides technology maintenance services to government road transport agencies in the UK and abroad. ITMS looks after key equipment on a road network, including emergency phone lines, tunnel closure barriers, message signs and CCTV to ensure that road users are safe. ITMS helps those government agen-
cies manage road networks – primarily interurban with everything from sensors to speed management to safety enforce- ment. They ensure that major roads are operating smoothly so that driv- ers can get to where they want to go – whether navigating the national intercity
