Building A Strong Relationship With Your Child by Dwight Franklin, AP

M

other’s Day is almost here. While we are given so much by our mothers, we don’t

always recognize how diffi cult life can get for them. The sacrifi ces they make are many and they often do not get the credit they so richly deserve. Thank you, mothers! Let me offer some helpful tools to make your lives more fulfi lling. To review: there are fi ve different personality types in Oriental Medicine. A Fire Type is more outgoing and funny, but can have trouble putting others fi rst. An Earth Type is a true friend and thrives on personal relationships, but can be people pleasers and worriers. Metal Types are very structured and can be very rigid in their thinking. A Water Type is a person who is a dreamer, artistic and truly cares about the world in its entirety—but many times forgets that there are concerns closer to home. Lastly, the Wood Types are very physical beings who like to explore and enjoy physical activities, but can have issues with anger when they feel confi ned. All of us have one of these unique personalities that explains who we are at our very core; hopefully, we learn how to incorporate the characteristics of the other personalities as we go along in life. Many times a mother can sacrifi ce her needs and desires for the needs and desires of her children. This may create an environment where the mother feels

dis-satisfi ed from purposely ignoring her own tendencies. Also, children can miss out on learning from their mother’s unique personality. To all the mothers out there: I am here to tell you that you can have both a life that is satisfying and children that are well-adapted, learning how to relate to the needs of others. To make this beautiful relationship

thrive, you need to know the personality and heart of both yourself and your child. What is it that makes you both tick individually and what personality confl icts are there between you and your child? For example, mothers with a Metal personality can fi nd it very diffi cult raising Fire personality kids. The need for structure from a Metal mom can be challenged by the need for fun and excitement from a Fire child. However, there will always be

challenges but within challenges are chances to learn; learning from each other is what must happen. A Fire child can help to melt the Metal mom’s rigid thinking and the Metal mother can help

the Fire child fi nd some structure in their outgoing personality. The mother in this situation must understand that a perfectly tidy room and straight As in math may not be in the cards for that child, but teaching the child how to use its Fire qualities in a more structured way (such as dancing, acting, singing) is very benefi cial. It does not matter what two core personalities are involved in the mother- child relationship. They can all be wonderful, happy relationships when the mother is accepting of the unique needs of her child—while at the same time not forgetting that she has many unique char- acteristics of her own that help to shape that child into a well-rounded individual. These concepts take practice and require a lot of effort and love. Luckily, those are the two things that mothers seem to have in abundance. Happy Mother’s Day!
