Honoring the Empress! Understanding the dynamic strength of every woman through the eyes of Oriental Medicine by Amy Gendron, AP • Acupuncture Physician
T
hroughout my life I have found myself in the presence of powerful women. As a
single parent, my mom raised four kids, maintained a home, all while working her way up in corporate America. As a fi eld hockey player, my teammates and I overcame obstacles with unwavering tenacity. As a birth doula, I stood by as women endured bringing their most precious creation into the physical realm. Now as an Acupuncture Physician, I get the opportunity to empower women as they take on life’s challenges. A lot of the women I see for various ailments present with a pattern we call Kidney and Heart disharmony. I believe that Acupuncture works best for these women because the mind, body, spirit approach to healing addresses so many symptoms at the same time.
Before I delve into this subject any deeper, let me explain a few things in terms of Oriental Medicine. The Kidneys and the Heart are more than physical organs; they also have mental and spiritual attributes.
Water • Yin (nourishment) • Kidney • Instinct, Will Power • Fear • Reproduction and Development
Fire • Yang (movement) • Heart • Awareness, Mental Acuity • Joy • Circulation

As illustrated above, the relationship between the Kidneys and the Heart is one of checks and balances. Water prevents the fi re of the heart from burning everything in its path. The fi re provides movement to otherwise very still water. In nature women are relatively more yin than men. The ability to nourish a child in utero is a very yin activity. The labor and delivery process is yang, but is much shorter in duration than the gestation period. So what does all of this mean? To start with it means that addressing Kidney and Heart disharmony in women is different than treating it in a man—constitutionally they have different needs. Secondly, trying to be the equivalent of a man in work or home life undermines our unique feminine gifts. Let me be clear: I believe a woman can be anything she wants to be, but THE WAY she achieves her goals will be different than that of her male counterpart. What I see in the baby boomers I treat for menopause is that they have run themselves down, trying to fi t a societal role that was made by men,
