nia, Pepperdine University, Florida State University, Georgia State University, Florida International University, Grand Canyon University and University of Hawaii. Sand scholarship opportunities are growing each year. With that growth, sand programs are trending toward a higher percentage of sand- only players, though currently the majority of sand players are still indoor players doing double duty. According to the AVCA’s most recent data, 45 percent of the players in sand programs that have been active for three years play only sand; that percentage goes up for programs that have been operating for just one or two years. (Players who are on indoor scholarships can compete on the sand


team, but players who are on sand scholar- ships cannot compete on the indoor team unless they sit out for two seasons.)


PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS


Because sand volleyball is a relatively new collegiate sport, it hasn’t infi ltrated the junior volleyball world as extensively as the indoor discipline. As the sport grows in popularity, this is likely to change and play- ers will be recruited as sand specialists. But right now, most players start their careers indoors before transitioning to the sand. So which indoor players are best able to make the transition to sand? “We are looking for a good athlete,” Mat-
