No.1 ranking for Loyola University Chicago, which sat atop the AVCA Division I-II Men’s Volleyball poll for the fi rst time in the program’s history on Jan. 27. The team posted impressive early-season victories over BYU and UC Irvine (the two teams that played for the national title last year) and was riding the hot hitting of sophomore Thomas Jaeschke. The lone loss for the Ramblers, who will host the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship in May, was to Southern California.

New rule changes the FIVB will test this year in beach volleyball. The block rule will be modifi ed in all FIVB age group events in 2014, allowing players three contacts after the initial contact at the net. Originally the rule was going to be tested at the FIVB World Tour level, but the test was modifi ed in early March. The second rule test change will deal with service receive and be tested at the U19 and U17 World Champion- ships. In those events, players will be allowed to re- ceive the ball overhand with the fi ngers as long as the ball rebounds immediately. The third rule will allow coaches to sit around the player area and interact with competitors during warm ups and timeouts. That will be tested in all age group events.

Months Gary Sato was on the job as the head coach of Japan’s Men’s National Volleyball Team – the fi rst foreigner to lead either of that country’s national teams. Sato, a former assistant for the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, was replaced by Masashi Nanbu in an announcement made Feb. 17. Sato, who still had support of several Japanese national team players, said he barely had time to “scratch the surface” with his young team and was look- ing forward to building on what he had started, adding that the younger players he had brought in were showing lots of potential.
