day, the fans love the sport and love being entertained. It’s the best tournament I’ve ever played in.

Have you ever played a volleyball match you didn’t fi nd fun? Have you ever felt burnt out at any point?

I want to say no, but I have. When I’m making mistakes

and can’t seem to snap out of it is when it’s not fun. But only for that moment. Then I’m right back in love with the game. I have been burnt out before. I always thought I needed to train like the old school guys. Playing as much as possible whenever I could. During that period I got burnt out, but only because I was not getting better. I wasn’t fi ne tuning my skills and improving my weaknesses. I was just playing all the time. Training a little less but having goals and making improvements is what keeps you from getting burnt out.

PROBABLE

What’s the biggest change you’ve made for the sake of becoming a better volleyball player?

Training with specifi c goals and fi ne-tuning my game.

This game is amazing in that you are always learning and growing. I changed a big part of my game by getting serious in the weight room. Building up my strength so that I was able to last the summer without falling apart.

Sept. 25-28 *Dates subject to change What would you say to a young player who tends not to be

very receptive to suggestions or feedback on how to improve his or her game?

I say you are only hurting yourself. The highest level athletes are able to adjust, change and take criticism. We are all results-oriented as athletes, so trying to change without a good result is very hard to accept and apply. You need to be able to implement changes that will help you without worrying so much about the immediate result. The results will come but you need to be patient and realize that it’s part of the growing process.

What do you think is a good path for a young player to fol- low who wants to be a professional beach player?

Watch lots of video. I watch a ton of YouTube clips of all the

greats. You will create mental images that will make it easier to apply in your game. Play against athletes that are better than you. You will adapt and learn to beat them.

How coachable was the 16-year-old Casey Patterson? I was actually very coachable. I wanted to learn and get as much information as I could because I was not the most athletic. All I wanted was to be able to jump like my buddies who could fl y. But because I couldn’t I tried to be a student of the game and win in other ways.
