Boyce Banquet to honor 1964


U.S. teams in 50th anniversary of Olympic volleyball

The Dorothy C. Boyce Banquet and Reception will honor the pioneers of those 1964 U.S. Olympic Volleyball Teams as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of volleyball’s introduction as an Olympic sport. The Boyce Ban- quet is the signature event during the USA Volleyball Annual Meetings and is scheduled for May 21 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. The addition of women’s volleyball into the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games was even more special as it marked the fi rst women’s team competition of any sport contested in the Olympics. The team featured powerful hitters of


their era in the likes of Jane Ward and Mary Jo Peppler.


The rest of the team was comprised of Patti Lucas Bright, Jean Gaertner, Lou Galloway, Barbara Harweth, Linda Murphy, Gail O’Rourke, Nancy Owen, Mary Margaret Perry, Sharon Peterson and Verneda Thomas. The men’s team posted a 2-7 record en route to a ninth-place fi nish. The roster was comprised of Mike Bright, Barry Brown, Keith Erickson, Bill Griebenow, Dick Hammer, Jacob High- land, Ron Lang, Charles Nelson, Mike O’Hara, Ernie Suwara, John Taylor and Pedro Velasco.
