Waterpark update

Next month the Spanish park Isla Mágica will launch a brand new waterpark called Agua Mágica. Its opening comes on the back of the success last summer of Aquaventura slide park at
Avonturenpark Hellendoorn in the Netherlands. But what do both facilities have in common? Each are owned and operated by the French- based Looping group and were kitted out by Polin Waterparks & Pool Systems

he new facility at Hellendoorn, which opened last summer, is described as a “slide park” rather than a waterpark. Featuring 11 waterslides and aquatic attractions for guests of all ages, the 5,000 square metre facility (16,404 sq ft) operates as a seasonal add-on to the park’s 30+ rides, shows and attractions, including three rollercoasters, a log flume, rapids ride and tried and tested favourites such as a Top Spin, Pirate Ship, Enterprise and Wave Swinger. To enjoy the Aquaventura facilities, guests are charged a reasonable €6.00 on top of regular park admission. Located near the German border in Overijssel, the fourth-largest province in the Netherlands, the local climate dictates that the water slides can operate for just two months a year, July and August. Nevertheless Looping group CEO Laurent Bruloy was keen to add them: "We always have plans for additions to the parks and will definitely keep on investing in them in the coming years," he says.

Looping group, the waterpark facilities provide a smart way of bringing in additional revenue without expanding the footprints of the existing parks

After relocating several of the Hellendoorn’s existing attractions, crews from Polin began installing the slides, manufactured using a resin-transfer moulding (RTM) process to ensure a smooth, shiny finish on both sides. As you can see here, they are finished in bold colours. The €3 million ($4 million) installation includes a rafting slide, black hole combination, wave slide, body slide, compact slide, wide slide and multi slide. Each of the slides finished in a dry run-out. There are no splash pools, which cut down on a considerable amount of associated groundwork. At Avonturenpark Hellendoorn, Aquaventura was installed in a bid to attract more ‘tweens’ – and it worked as up to 7,000 extra guests per day came to enjoy the water slides during what was, admittedly, a very hot summer in the Netherlands. For the Looping group, the waterpark facilities also provide a smart way of bringing in additional revenue without expand the footprints of the existing parks. Accordingly, the new Agua Mágica waterpark at Isla Mágica in Seville, which guests will be able to enjoy for an additional €7.00, will also be built within the site’s existing confines. Civil works on the 4,500 sq
m site, alongside the Cyclone, are now complete and slide installation is due by Polin any day now. Again the slides will be built with dry run-outs, but there will be more water throughout the park in general thanks to the warm southern Spanish climate. “At the beginning, the waterpark season will be shorter than Isla Mágica,” Bruloy tells Park World. “As and when the business grows, we will adjust the dates to match those of the original park for the coming years.”

As well as Polin’s slides, guests will be able to enjoy a wave pool, lazy river, 600 sq m family pool, child pool and interactive play area. A terrace will allow guests to soak up the sun, but not before they have stocked up on sunscreen from the Tiendita Maya retail store. Two snack bars will also be available. Bruloy seems happy with the products provided
Polin, describing the Turkish supplier as “cheaper, faster and with a range of amazing hybrid slides.” He adds that another slide park, similar in format to Aquaventura at Hellendoorn, is under consideration for the Looping group’s Bagatelle site in France.
