On Friday 20 June, “Team WLSL” will usher in the first official day of summer as it attempts to set a fifth Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted. The international team, made up guests at waterparks and other aquatic facilities around the world, is coming together to raise awareness of childhood drowning and promote the message: “swimming lessons save lives.” The current world record, set during the World’s Largest Swimming

Lesson in 2013, stands at 32,450 participants hosted by 432 facilities in 13 countries. The achievement marked a 30% increase over the previous year’s record of 24,873 and generated more than 50 million media impressions. Tragically, drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury related death for children aged one to five, and the second leading cause for children under 14. Participation in swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children under the age of five, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training. The World Waterpark Association supports the World's Largest Swimming

Lesson in its mission, and now this is your chance to help break the record in 2014 by hosting a WLSL event at your waterpark or attraction, or volunteering at another venue already taking part. The website is below, and there’s you got three months to get everything together, so get involved!

Gillian retreats to Ocean City

After just five summers in business, Gillian’s Funland is to turn out the lights close in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. Jay Gillian, who owns both this park and the larger Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in nearby Ocean City, cited factors including damage from 2012’s Hurricane Sandy for the decision to close. The park opened partially last summer, “but we just had to replace so many rides and we just couldn’t come back,” explains Gillian. “It was like starting a whole new amusement park again. We decided after five years to close it down and focus on Ocean City.”
