Park comeback?

A co-operative has been formed in Leomintser, Massachusetts, to recreate the spirit of the Whalom Park, which operated locally from 1893 to 2000.

The original Whalom Park was established on Lake Whalom in 1893 by the Fitchburg and

Leominster Street Railway as a traditional, English-style gardens spanning 30 acres. The park included 25 rides, including one wooden rollercoaster and a water ride. When it closed in 2000, the park was the 13th-oldest amusement park in the United States, and the second-oldest trolley park in the world.

The New Whalom Cooperative wants to build a family entertainment centre using the Whalom Park name, operating year-round. More details are unclear until sufficient funds can be raised. In the meantime, here’s a few shots of the park in its heyday for all teh nostalgia fans out there.

Putting dark rides on the map

Imagine a dark ride with a theme that you could change at the flick of a switch. That’s what the 3D/4D film distributor The Juice is offering in partnership with ThemesparX. Using video mapping, the two British companies plan to offer parks and attractions a flexible product that projects media content onto the walls or other surfaces of the ride building. Potentially all manner of props and objects, not just a video screen, could be brought to life with custom content.

As this simple illustration shows, the concept is well suited to parks that want to offer a bespoke dark ride for different seasons.

Silverwood to double family

area for 2014 Idaho’s Silverwood theme park will almost double the size of its family area for 2014. Parents and their children will be able to fly side-by-side on a Kite Glider by Zamperla, ride a giant puppy on a mini jet-style ride from SBF/Visa or, from the same manufacturer, get in a twirl on the new spinning family coaster (as pictured). The park’s popular kiddie wheel will also be re-themed and relocated to the new area, north of Garfield’s Summer Camp.

All the above will open prior to the first day of summer 2014. Space has also been made for a fifth ride, a Zamperla family balloon ride opening in 2015.
